St. Malachy is NOT the author of the OT book of Malachi. St. Malachy, an Irish bishop, was a 12th-century Catholic saint that predicted characteristics of the last 112 popes. (From the Catholic Encyclopedia 1913 edition) 'The most famous and best known prophecies about the popes are those attributed to St. Malachy. In 1139 he went to Rome to give an account of the affairs of his diocese to the pope, Innocent II, who promised him two palliums for the metropolitan Sees of Armagh and Cashel. While at Rome, he received (according to the Abbé Cucherat) the strange vision of the future wherein was unfolded before his mind the long list of illustrious pontiffs who were to rule the Church until the end of time. The same author tells us that St. Malachy gave his manuscript to Innocent II to console him in the midst of his tribulations, and that the document remained unknown in the Roman Archives until its discovery in 1590 (Cucherat, "Proph. de la succession des papes", ch. xv). They were first published by Arnold de Wyon, and ever since there has been much discussion as to whether they are genuine predictions of St. Malachy or forgeries. The silence of 400 years on the part of so many learned authors who had written about the popes, and the silence of St. Bernard especially, who wrote the "Life of St. Malachy", is a strong argument against their authenticity, but it is not conclusive if we adopt Cucherat's theory that they were hidden in the Archives during those 400 years.' Kalos : It seems not only inevitable but proper and customary of the routine course of events for which StudyBibleForum has earned a certain dubious distinction in the world of cyberspace that sooner or later it would get its prophets confused with its saints to the degree that it becomes hard to tell whether the prophets go marching out or the saints go marching in, or even whether either group is marching at all. In the case now open for consideration, Malachi was an OT prophet who wrote an OT book that bears his name; and, as you dutifully pointed out, St. Malachy didn't. And of course the dogged silence of St. Malachy's biographer, St. Bernard, who barks not a time about Malachy's prophetic prowess, does give rise to a certain skepticism about Malachy's claim to fame as a prophet. And let us not pass without paying homage to that venerable Scottish worthy, Would-Be St. Malarkey. Even though he died many years ago and is, so far as anyone knows, still dead, hardly a day passes that one isn't exposed to Malarkey's profound influence on modern thought. Even here on the Forum one can find quite a bit of Malarkey from time to time. --Hank | ||||||
