Hi Doc, Romans 8:16, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of (God). 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God,..." Ephesians 1:10, NKJ, "...--in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of (Him) who works all things according to the counsel of His will," ******* 1) Here are my thoughts of what John Calvin wrote. I think that the "testimony" (of the Spirit) is more excellent than all reason. God witnesses to Himself in His word, and He witnesses with our spirit. He witnesses to us through the mouths of the prophets, and we are persuaded by those words (given by the Spirit). By this power [sic] we are drawn and inflamed, knowingly and willingly, to obey Him. The word(s) will not find acceptance in men's hearts before it is sealed by the inward testimony of the Spirit. There is power in the words of God. Here then is my interpretation of Ephesians 1:13 for what it is worth. Ephesians 1:13, "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the *holy *spirit of promise, 14 which is given as a pledge of our inheritance,..." Dear Brother Ray, I believe you captured the thought that John Calvin was trying to express very well. I hope that you are finding great grace in the afflictions you are now facing. I am praying that God will be glorified through them, and that you will have a strong sense of all that is behind your desire to properly capitalize! May God bless you and your family! In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc, Thank you for your encouragement and prayers. Do you think that John Calvin made any distinction between the Word and the word(s) of God? Were they aware yet in his day of the inheritance that they were to receive in/by/through the Scriptures? From the heart, Ray |

Dear Brother Ray, I believe that in Calvin's day their was a much greater understanding of the Word than we have today. It is clear from the writings of these men that they were thoroughly emersed in the Scriptures. Their great discipline has bore the fruit that their sermons and writings are known today. This is not due to their own greatness at all -- for many brilliant men have lived, died, and been forgotten -- but rather God preserves His Own Word and, consequently, preserves the words of those who declare it with the greatest clarity. Every individual word of the Word is necessary to the whole. God has said what He will completely, clearly, and sufficiently. Remember, we live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
