Hi, LSmith... The Scriptures represent death as primarily a separation of soul and body. "The dust returneth to the earth as it was, and the spirit returneth unto God who gave it" (Eccl. 12:7). "For as the body apart from the spirit is dead" (James 2:36a). To answer your question about what happens when we die, an answer depends on whether we are saved or lost. As believers, we go immediately to the Lord, making a transition from one kind of life to another. For Christians it means the cleansing of the soul from the last vestiges of sin and an entrance into the presence of God. (2 Cor 5:8) The old divines put stated it this way: "The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness, and do immediately pass into glory; and their bodies, being still united to Christ, do rest in their graves, till the resurrection." For believers, death is a superior and happier condition. "And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." (Rev 14:13) However, it is clear from the parable of Lazarus and Dives (Luke 16:19-31) that for the lost, the situation is quite reversed. In Him, Doc |
