We have just started biblestudy in our house. Every sunday a man comes around and teaches us about the bible. He told us a couple of times already that having statues of Jesus on the cross and images of Him in our house is not so good. Then he refered to many verses in the bible. All about idolatry. Because we believe him, we got rid of all the statues and images of Jesus and threw them in the bin. Did we do the right thing here? | ||||||

I rather doubt they were idols, unless you thought of them as somehow holy or special over and above any other physical thing. My Bible, for example, is just a piece of cow hide, layers of dried plant pulp that's been stained with a bunch of markings. It is just a thing. The power is not in the thing. On the other hand, images tend to take on a reality unto themselves. No image, no matter how cleverly wrought or artistically done (even movies fall into this category), can adequately portray Christ. He is much more. Images tend to get in the way of our realizing that. Now, regarding idolatry, that is something we all deal with. Calvin said that from infancy we are all master idol makers! :-) Anything that takes precedence over the Lord in our hearts, minds, actions, etc. is an idol. So chucking out statues and stuff is a very tiny part of the battle! God bless you! In Him, Doc |
