When Hosea is speaking about Ephraim or Judah or Israel, what exactly does this signify? I want to learn more about the tribal culture during this time period. | ||||||

Ephraim, Judah, and Israel are areas of land where much of the Bible took place. Israel is the general name of the Promised Land given by God to Abraham. Judah is area around Jerusalem or the southern half of Israel. Ephraim is the land east of Jordan that was contained in the promised land and settled by the tribe of Ephraim but is not included in the normal boundaries of Israel proper. You may want to go to the library and begin your study of this area in a Bible Atlas to understand the relationship of the various areas. Then I would suggest reading the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia looking up each of these words. Lastly I would get a commentary on Hosea and sit down and read Hosea again and then read the what the commentary has to say about the passage you just read. If you have a little more specific question please ask and I'm sure someone will help you to an answer. I hope this will get you started in your study. EdB |
