Covenant I. The Eight Covenants, Summary: (1) The Edenic Covenant (See Scofield "Genesis 1:26") conditioned the life of man in innocency. (2) The Adamic Covenant (See Scofield "Genesis 3:14") conditions the life of fallen man and gives promise of a Redeemer. (3) The Noahic Covenant (See Scofield "Genesis 9:1") establishes the principle of human government. (4) The Abrahamic Covenant (See Scofield "Genesis 15:18") founds the nation of Israel, and confirms, with specific additions, the Adamic promise of redemption. (5) The Mosaic Covenant (See Scofield "Exodus 19:25") condemns all men, "for that all have sinned." (6) The Palestinian Covenant (See Scofield "Deuteronomy 30:3") secures the final restoration and conversion of Israel. (7) The Davidic Covenant (See Scofield "2 Samuel 7:16") establishes the perpetuity of the Davidic family (fulfilled in Christ, Matthew 1:1; Luke 1:31-33,; Romans 1:3) and of the Davidic kingdom, over Israel, and over the whole earth; to be fulfilled in and by Christ (2 Samuel 7:8-17; Zechariah 12:8; Luke 1:31-33; Acts 15:14-17; 1 Corinthians 15:24). (8) The New covenant rests upon the sacrifice of Christ, and secures the eternal blessedness, under the Abrahamic Covenant Galatians 3:13-29 of all who believe. It is absolutely unconditional, and, since no responsibility is by it committed to man, it is final and irreversible. II. The relation of Christ to the eight covenants is as follows: (1) To the Edenic Covenant, Christ, as the "second Man," the "last Adam" 1 Corinthians 15:45-47 takes the place over all things which the first Adam lost ; Colossians 2:10; Hebrews 2:7-8. (2) He is the "Seed of the woman" of the Adamic Covenant Genesis 3:15; John 12:31; 1 John 3:8; Galatians 4:4; Revelation 20:10 and fulfilled its conditions of toil Mark 6:3 and obedience. (3) As the greatest son of Shem, in Him was fulfilled supremely the promise to Shem in the Noahic Covenant. (See Scofield "Genesis 9:1") Colossians 2:9. (4) He is the "Seed to whom the promises were made" in the Abrahamic Covenant; the son of Abraham obedient unto death Genesis 22:18; Galatians 3:16; Philippians 2:8. (5) He lived sinlessly under the Mosaic covenant and bore for us its curse. Galatians 3:10-13. (6) He lived obediently as a Jew in the land under the Palestinian Covenant, and will yet perform it gracious promises Deuteronomy 28:1-30:9. (7) He is the "Seed," "Heir," and "King" under the Davidic Covenant Matthew 1:1; Luke 1:31-33. (8) His sacrifice is the foundation of the New Covenant Matthew 26:28; 1 Corinthians 11:25. ____________________ (http://bible.crosswalk.com/Commentaries/ScofieldReferenceNotes/) Footnote at Hebrews 8:8 |

Reighnskye, Is Genesis 1:26 a covenant? I say NO. It is the decision by the Trinity (God is Elohim) to make man "in our own image" ... then verse 27 is a command. Once again I do not side with an expert on this issue. Dr. Scofield had his reasons to cite only eight of the MANY covenants between God and man. Not all covenants are between God and the world. Sometimes it is between God and a specific person or group. For example, Deuteronomy 30:3 (on his list) is just between God and Israel. You need to read the covenant as see if it applies to you. If it is you should not break it. If it doesn't apply, you can't break it. The covenant is not the same as the Law. Are you free to break the Law (of the OT)? Some say yes, I say no ... because the only part that has been improved is blood sacrifice - read Hebrews 8-10. The rest is still binding. Searcher |

Searcher, I have to agree. I really don't interpret Genesis 1:26-28 as a covenant, but rather as a command. I think many people would like to look at God's commands as covenants, so that if they don't choose to make such a covenant with God, they can escape having to obey the commands. In a sense, covenants are optional. If a person doesn't make the particular covenant, then they won't have to obey the stipulations therein. Whereas, we actually don't have a say whether we want to obey God's laws or not. The law will be enforced, whether we agree to it or not. Then again, maybe Scofield is interpreting Genesis 1:26-28 as a covenant of marriage versus a law of marriage. Adam and Eve are commanded to rule and multiply the earth. Is this optional or mandated? Is it covenant or law? And must we fulfill it today? Must we multiply and rule the earth? Genesis 1 26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth." (NAS95) - As far as covenants which are specifically made with Israel as opposed to the church, one may possibly argue that the church is spiritual Israel, and therefore all of the covenants originally made with the nation of Israel now apply to spiritual Israel (the church). Romans 9 6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; (NAS95) Romans 2 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God. (NAS95) - Further, I again agree that the covenant is not the same as the law. Again, covenants are optional. If I don't make the covenant, then I won't experience the potential penalties and/or benefits thereof. Deuteronomy 23 21 "When you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for it would be sin in you, and the LORD your God will surely require it of you. (NAS95) Ecclesiastes 5 5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. (NAS95) However, this is not so with the Law. I cannot choose which laws to obey and which not to obey, even If I can pick and choose what covenants that I wish to bind myself under. - Blessings, Reighnskye |
