1 | Superscripts in the Psalms? | Bible general Archive 2 | ACUYFM06 | 97276 | ||
Hey all! I have to do a report for Wisdom and Devotion Literature of the Old Testament, and I wanted to get some opinions. I don't want to take your opinion and make it my own, I just want to know what you guys think. The topic is the significance of the superscripts in the Psalms. I have some different ideas and theories, but to avoid "leading the witness," I'm going to leave this one open. I'm interested to hear some insights. Thanks a lot! RLB |

RLB If I understand your question you asking about the practice of adding words to complete a thought in scripture signified by italicizing or in some Bibles superscripting the added word. The translators do this to aid reading with the understanding that the added words would be implied and understood by the reader of the original language. EdB |

Greetings EdB! If I am not mistaken, I believe RLB is refering to the descriptive titles included in the Psalms. Some believe that they are not original to the text. However, there canonical manuscriptus all contain them. For instance, Psalm 51 has this descriptive title prior to the text: "For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba." The New Testament even refers to them at times. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
