1 | buying a house.....debt? | Bible general Archive 2 | msdudda21 | 129981
I am looking for advice about buying a house. I have been told that buying a house is getting into debt. I don't think that is the kind of debt that is talked about in the bible. I won't go into a long thing about what I think debt is but basically living outside your means. So my question is what is debt and what does the bible mean about debt. thanks

msdudda21 Debt is debt. The Bible warns about debt. One that owes another is a virtual slave to that person. Having been in debt and having been free of debt I can tell you being free is by far the ideal. Will debt cause us to sin? Probably not but uncontrolled debt has been known to. There are risks we must take in life, one of them may be debt for such things as a house. However I do know many young couples that cut their expenses to the bone and surprising themselves and most everyone around them were able to purchase a home debt free. We have been conditioned to buy things we simply don’t need or even really want. Prove this to yourself get up Saturday morning and go to the garage sales. You can save up the money to buy a house if you really try in short order. You may have to cook all you meals, eat leftovers, carry a lunch and not buy the latest and greatest but I assure you if you can buy on credit you can buy it for cash. You have no idea how much money you blow through. My neighbor a young couple with a 3 small children were able to save enough money to enable him to quit his job and go to a very prestigious college for 6 months to get training he needed to enhance his career and then return home and live for 3 months until he found the right job. If they could save that much in about 2 years think how much they could have saved in 5. Let me tell you they live very modest lives, but they can do things that most would think was impossible. The average house mortgage is three times the actual cost of the house. Most are 30 year mortgages and include tax and insurance. So every ten years of the mortgage your paying cash for the house plus the taxes and insurance on it. Now think about it if you paid for the house in ten years plus most of the major overhead think how much you could save. The first words out of everyone’s mouth is how can I save money and pay for rent. There are options, moving back home, renting a smaller apartment, renting a trailer. Not an option right. Why? How about building the house yourself or looking at buying a double wide. EdB |
