1 | sound byte or context? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 125585
When using scripture to discuss Christian topics and support your viewpoint, how do you know how much context to use? To provide an overly simple example, 1 John 4:8 "The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love" Some people might argue from that verse that God wouldn't send anyone to hell, but in the context of the whole New Testament, or 1 John for that matter it obviously isn't true. So to be fair you can't use "sound bytes". To give a real world example, Romans 9:11 "For though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls," Now, if we look just at this one verse it seems to be the perfect verse in support of predestination. On the other hand, when you look at it in the context of Romans chapters 9,10,11 you see that Paul is explaining that just because the Jews have the birthright as God's chosen people that does not guarantee salvation for them. God can choose to use the Gentiles, and branch Israel could repent and be grafted back in to the tree. So, what real world rule of thumb do YOU use? Huron |

2 | sound byte or context? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 125586
Huron This has been my argument for many years especially here on the forum. We are all sound byte experts. For a verse to really stand as it should it has to stand in agreement with the rest of scripture. In your example and not to get a C/A argument started, all through scripture we see men and women making decisions that effect their lives, their people's lives (read humanity) and their relationship with God, we also see God’s reaction to those decisions. However we home in on a few verses and say there, this proves there is no choice, it is all predestined. Your right that is a problem. You ask how much context needs to be included? Enough to make the verse reconcile with all the rest of scripture. I do not believe there is any conflicting verses in the Bible only conflicting understandings and explanations. The real sad part of this is we use our context ripping to do two things as an attempt to prove a concept that hasn’t stood orthodoxy for 2000 years. We see this a lot lately as a man stands and says I was reading the Bible last night and the Spirit brought me to this place and wow would you look, here is something I have never heard before. Your right you never heard it before because it isn’t orthodox Christianity it is nothing more than you trying to find something to draw people to you or your cause. The other example of scripture ripping is in the attempt discredit or to prove there is fault within the Bible. Neither one ought not to be. EdB |
