"7:1 acted unfaithfully. Lit., broke faith. Achan’s action was a breach of covenant law (v. 11)." (Ryrie's Study Bible) "This verse is a transition between the story of the conquest of Jericho and that of the defeat at Ai. It sets up the next chapter (especially vv. 20, 21). The phrase committed a trespass means “committed a treacherous violation.” The names of Achan and his forebears in this verse are found again in 1 Chr. 2:6, 7. Usually whenever the anger of the LORD burned against Israel; He raised up an adversary against the nation to threaten and overpower it. Here God used the small army of Ai. The Lord’s anger did not subside until Achan and his family had been punished (7:26)." (The Nelson NKJV Study Bible) "Trespass The sin of Israel which led to defeat at Ai was threefold: (1) and most important, was the deliberate disobedience of Achan, for which God held the nation corporately responsible (vv. 1, 11); (2) the decision to send only a few men, because the city was small (v. 3), indicated a sinful dependence upon human strength rather than upon God; and (3) there is no record of any communication with God for directions in taking Ai, as in the case of Jericho (6:1-5)."
