"All the Scriptures -- that is to say, the books of the Old and New Testaments -- are the word of God. From Him they came; they were spoken by holy men of God; they contain a full, sufficient, and perfect revelation of the mind and will of God, concerning all things that are necessary to be know for our salvation (Psalm 40:6-8; Isaiah 49:1-6; 53:10-12; John 17:4-5); and they are the only infallible rule of faith and obedience. The truths which they contain respecting God and the perfections of His nature are so exceedingly broad and deep, that no one could have revealed them, except Him who has a perfect knowledge of Himself (Psalm 89:3; Zechariah 6:13); the godliness and self denial of the writers, the purity and holiness of all the truths contained in the Scriptures, the consistency of all the parts, though written by various persons and in various ages of the world (John 10:18; 12:49; 14:31; 18:11; Hebrews 2:10; 9:15-17; 10:5-10; Zechariah 13:7; Isaiah 53:10-12), the continued preservation of the Scriptures, though the strongest authorities on earth have assailed and sought to destroy them, the fact that it is their main design to manifest God's greatness and glory (Psalm 40:6-8; Hebrews 7:22; 10:5-10; John 6:39; 17:2, 12; Ephesians 1:22, 23; 5:23; 1 Corinthians 15:21, 22, 45-49), their authority and influence over the hearts and lives of men, and the superiority of those nations which have had the Scriptures, in every age of the world, over other nations, in morals, knowledge, and all else that adorns humanity, -- all these things prove beyond a doubt that the infinite God is their author (Isaiah 59:21; Hebrews 2:4; John 7:39; 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:8-9; 1 Thessalonians 1:5,6; 2 Corinthians 3:6-8; Galatians 4:6). "Besides, we have no grounds for thinking that either men or angels are the authors of the Holy Scriptures; we cannot suppose that bad men, in early times, were the authors of the Scriptures, without supposing also that evil had changed its former nature; and it is very certain that evil spirits never fashioned these weapons which are destined to subvert their kingdom in the hearts of men; and it would not be consistent with the holiness of the elect angels, nor with the holiness of godly men, to utter a lie in the name of The Lord of Hosts; it is, therefore, abundantly evident that the Scriptures come from God, and from no other source (Isaiah 53:5, 6, 10, 11; Psalm 40:6-8; Romans 5:6; 8:3-4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 4:4,5; Matthew 20:28; 1 Peter 2:24)." --Confession of Faith of the Calvinistic Methodists or the Presbyterians of Wales (1823), chapter 2, paragraphs 3-4 |

I think it is important to examine the assumed understanding of what 'scripture' is to answer some questions about it's authority. My heart and mind have been prompted recently to look carefully at the 'scripture' as referred to in the Biblical contexts. My findings (a 'lay' person) are that SCRIPTURE refers to the teaching of God under the old law... Jesus, as well as the NT authors, constantly refer to those 'scriptures'....even in the most quoted text, 2 Tim 3:16,(All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness...)we find reference to the old law (vs 15). Yes, I believe that the NT books were written under the inspiration of God, but that they show us how to "live" lives obedient to and blessed through the power of the scriptures, but under a new expression of God's authority: grace. As a little girl I remember wondering, "Who gets to make up all these rules?" For instance, my tender heart as a little girl noticed that I was to not cut my hair or go to worship without some covering on my head (I Cor. 1:3-6). But it was explained to me that in the culture during which that rule was observed the uncovered head was a practice of prostitutes of the day. I believe there are many implications for examining other teachings. Look at the NT teaching to take care of the widows and orphans...in the days of the NT writings, widows were women with few rights and required the protection of the male members of their family for their survival. Organizing the deacons to see to their needs was a way to exercise the scriptural teachings about love. As a widowed person, I know in our culture that we are generally provided for by our mates at their death, and that those provisions are protected by the law of civil government...today, the teaching, if recorded, might be to take care of the homeless. So, for me I have answered the questions about 'who gets to make up the rules.' No more rules are needed, but the Biblical examples of how the first century Christians applied "scripture" in their daily lives is ispiration or at least example for us to apply to our culture's needs. I believe the teachings of the apostles were inspired and represent the best solutions found, through spiritual guidance, to apply the true "SCRIPTURES" of God, spoken by God, to His People throughout history. I do not believe that the term 'scripture' is used in any way but to refer back to the original teaching of God to his people. We can interpret those teachings for our culture and our communities with a pure heart focused on God's original teachings. | ||||||

Hi, 4alady... Welcome to the forum! Do not forget the gifts that Christ plundered for the church (Ephesians 4:8-16). We want to avail ourselves of all the gifts of God. God's revelation was progressive. Nonetheless, we have yet to plumb the depths of this treasure (Matthew 13:52). A high esteem for how the Spirit instructs us from Word, will yield a high esteem to hear what He has taught others. In Him, Doc |
