For Bible study and reading I usually use the NASB, NIV, and AMPLIFIED. In regard to the KJV (Authorized Version): The version available today is different from the original one produced in the 1600s. It has been updated, corrected, and reworked many times. It is a beautiful Bible translation that has blessed countless people. P.S. As a lifelong Southern Baptist, I believe that the 10-12 million dollars (assuming your amounts are accurate) invested by SBC and Holman in publishing another English language Bible should have been spent in mission projects or in translating Bibles into the languages of those who have no version of God's wonderful Word. Look at the real, selfless nonprofit work of Wycliffe and the enormous task yet to be done in the world. Those Holman millions would have reached a great number of the ignored unsaved. |

Pardon me if I am a little off-topic here. But to your entry I would like to add: Likewise, American Christians, when all added together, spend billions of dollars on non-essentials every year, when we could be giving to missions to reach the precious children and adults of third-world countries. In these places the people live in deep poverty and deprivation and, without Christ, have no hope for anything better in the next life. Ten-twelve million dollars doesn't even begin to approach the worth of the soul of one precious child in Africa, South America, Asia or anywhere else. How many of us spend a dollar or more every day at the convenience store to buy Pepsi? Surely we could buy 12-packs of canned Pepsi at the grocery store, and set aside a dollar a day for missions. Think of the impact on missions of setting aside one dollar per day per every Christian in America.

RE: Holman Baptist Version: Not only is your point well-taken, but I know many people who already participate in personal ministry in ways similar to your proposal. Some contribute like the biblical widow and others from an abundance. And as you suggest they are making an impact... let's pray your comment will touch all who read it and spur each to personal action.
