Hi, I have several questions about the bible. Why the "Book of James", is not called "Book of Jacob"? It is true that the names and places in the Bible have been changed and aren't using the correct Hebrew names? For example, "The Book of Matthew" should be called "The book of Mattityah"? Thanks, Lorenzo Jiménez |

Greetings Lorenzo! Matthew and James are both Greek names. In the case of Matthew, the English is fairly close to the Greek. The Greek transliterated into English would be: Matthaios. However, James is no where never the actual Greek name. As you pointed out, James in Greek is actually: Iakobos, or as we would say it, Jacob. The general rule is to transliterate a Greek or Hebrew name into English, but that rule doesn't always work or wasn't always followed. Some think that King James may have wanted to see his name in the Bible, thus Jacob was translated as James. No one is sure. Now, it has become such a tradition that modern translation simply leave it as James. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
