1 | John Baptist's Jewish legal credentials? | NT general Archive 1 | Reighnskye | 134059 | ||
What were John the Baptist's legal Jewish credentials to baptize the Savior? We know that he was the son of the High Priest Zacharias. Shouldn't John have been ministering as High Priest, in the Holy Place of the temple, as opposed to baptizing the Savior in the wilderness? John the Baptist apparently trashed his fine religious robes to wear a poor man's garb of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. Shouldn't Jesus have been baptized by John at the temple? |

Reighnskye, Jesus was the High Priest (Hebrews 3:1). John was in Zacarhiah's line among the Levites. His mother, Elizabeth, was also from Aaron's line. Zachariah was among the eighth of 24 groups of Levitical priests (1 Chron 24:7-19). Zachariah was chosen (Luke 1:8-11) by lot to burn incense on the day the angel spoke to him before the altar of incense in the Holy Place (Ex 30:1-10)where the table of shewbread and the seven branched candlestick also were, not the Holy of Holies where the High Priest entered only once a year (Leviticus 16:15-19)and which was completely empty since there was no longer an Ark of the Covenant. John fulfills Malachi 3:1 in Luke 1:76 and Luke 7:26 and also Isaiah 9:2 and Luke 1:79. He comes in the spirit of Elijah (Luke 1:17), a prophet though of a priestly line and he dresses like Elijah (Luke 3:4; 2 Kings 1:8). He begins his ministry during the reign of the high priest Annas (Luke 3:20). John rather than clinging to his OT priesthood gives way (John 3:30) to the High Priest of the New Covenant, a Priest according to the order of Melchizadek, Jesus (Psalm 110:4; Hebrew 5:6, 10; 6;20; 7:17, 21). Emmaus, I greatly appreciate all of the fine verse references. I took the time to look all of them up and read them individually. It lays a nice framework for the answer to my question. Very enlightening. - Blessings, Reighnskye |
