Greetings Hank - I have recently been in a discussion on the importance of the creeds to contemporary Christianity. Although I agree with your assessment, and I believe what the creeds state, I struggle a bit with the concept that repeating a creed is akin to being a Christian. Growing up in the Baptist tradition, we did not regularly say the creeds, yet when I went to my husband's "high church" and heard the creeds repeated in the liturgy, it was a beautiful affirmation of all the Scripture I had learned. I think that the "modern" church has lost something, but I can't say that to repeat the creeds apart from the clear teaching of God's Word is the answer. Comments? Blessings, mommapbs |

I couldn't help notice Hank's excellent response to question of recited creeds versus preaching the Gospel. It's unfortunate that there exists today churches that do not preach and teach the full counsel of God's word, the finished work of the Cross of Jesus Christ, and the Gospel message. However, there are still many churches that do. Reciting a creed, any creed, just like reciting anything else - while it may be a beautiful experience to behold - won't amount to much eternally if souls are not being won to Christ. Being under the sound teaching of the Word of God, where the Holy Spirit of God is invited in and moving in people's hearts to salvation of the lost, and edification of the saints - THAT's what the church should be consumed with. I am not "against" creeds mind you, but they should in no way replace sound Bible doctrine teaching. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the hearts. Mommapbs, I certainly agree that the reciteing of the creeds is a beautiful ceramony and the information in the creeds is taught it is very revealing and helpful in bible study but I think that if we are going to repeat creeds as part of the wqorship service it should be only on occasion amd should never take the place of straight up Bible teaching. XRing please go back and read how this thread staeted Hank responded to a question I ask about Church Unity however I do agree with your statement that reciteing the creeds should not take the place of bible study in the church. Finally Hank thanks for your help again you have got me started when I was at a sticking point. God Bless You All In The Love Of Christ, tgc |

Where in this thread did anyone suggest that reciting creeds SHOULD take the place of straight-up Bible teaching? Hank, in his posts, never suggested such a thing. |
