Greetings Hank - I have recently been in a discussion on the importance of the creeds to contemporary Christianity. Although I agree with your assessment, and I believe what the creeds state, I struggle a bit with the concept that repeating a creed is akin to being a Christian. Growing up in the Baptist tradition, we did not regularly say the creeds, yet when I went to my husband's "high church" and heard the creeds repeated in the liturgy, it was a beautiful affirmation of all the Scripture I had learned. I think that the "modern" church has lost something, but I can't say that to repeat the creeds apart from the clear teaching of God's Word is the answer. Comments? Blessings, mommapbs |

Mommapbs: Clearly the mere recitation of creeds falls within the category of "vain repititions" that our Lord condemned regarding prayer (see Matthew 6:7). And, in reference to your implied question concerning the teaching role of the church, I would say that no amount of recitation of creeds fulfills, or becomes an adequate substitute for, the church's obligation to preach the gospel of Christ. --Hank | ||||||
