In doing my study on the unity of the church I have found that there are differing opions on the essentials of the Christan faith. I would greatly like to hear from as many of you as possible on this subject. What are the essentials of the Christan Faith? In The Love Of Christ, tgc

tgc: Centuries ago two widely known creeds were hammered out by godly men. These creeds have not only stood the test of time but they have not, in my view, been improved upon to this day. From antiquity they come to us: The Apostles' Creed dates back to within a half century after the last books of the New Testament were written, and the Nicene Creed dates back to the fourth century A.D. Each contains the essentials of the Christian faith. I won't reproduce either here since they are readily accessible in prayer books and hymnals, and on-line access can be obtained by going to a search engine such as Google and typing in the names of the Creeds. --Hank

Greetings Hank - I have recently been in a discussion on the importance of the creeds to contemporary Christianity. Although I agree with your assessment, and I believe what the creeds state, I struggle a bit with the concept that repeating a creed is akin to being a Christian. Growing up in the Baptist tradition, we did not regularly say the creeds, yet when I went to my husband's "high church" and heard the creeds repeated in the liturgy, it was a beautiful affirmation of all the Scripture I had learned. I think that the "modern" church has lost something, but I can't say that to repeat the creeds apart from the clear teaching of God's Word is the answer. Comments? Blessings, mommapbs |

Mommapbs: Clearly the mere recitation of creeds falls within the category of "vain repititions" that our Lord condemned regarding prayer (see Matthew 6:7). And, in reference to your implied question concerning the teaching role of the church, I would say that no amount of recitation of creeds fulfills, or becomes an adequate substitute for, the church's obligation to preach the gospel of Christ. --Hank
