There let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel.” (1 Kings 1:33-34 NKJV) The age of Solomon when he became king is not specified. He ruled for 40 years and passed away at the age of 52.” (See “King David's Last Will and Testament”, also known as “The Haftarah for Parashat VaYechi” at http://www.shemayisrael.co.il/parsha/haftorah/archives/vayechi62.htm) • Another tradition states, “Before David dies, he appoints as king his son Solomon, who is 12 years old at the time, with these words … Born in 848 BCE, Solomon dies at age 52 in 796 BCE, ruling as king for 40 years.” (See “Crash Course in Jewish History Part 19 - King Solomon” at http://www.aish.com/literacy/jewishhistory/Crash_Course_in_Jewish_History_Part_19_-_King_Solomon.asp) • The ancient historian Josephus states that Solomon was 14 years old when he became king: “So Solomon died when he was already an old man, having reigned eighty years, and lived ninety-four.” (“Antiquities of the Jews, by Flavius Josephus, Book 8, Chapter 7, section 8 [8.46], accessed 9/3/2012 at http://www.biblestudytools.com/history/flavius-josephus/antiquities-jews/book-8/chapter-7.html?p 3) |
