1 | Why does God allow mass murder? | OT general | TheSeeker8 | 188726
I cannot wrap my mind around this. In Genesis 38:9, God kills Judah's son Onan because Onan "emitted" on the ground instead of into his brother's widow. However, only a few chapters earlier (chapter 34), we see a story of Dinah. Dinah is violated, then her brothers kill every man in the town. How is it OK to kill every man in a city, but emitting on the ground is punishable by death from God?
2 | Why does God allow mass murder? | OT general | Bauhinia | 188727
"Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness." (2 Timothy 3:16) So, these accounts can show what's sinful, and discipline and correct us in righteousness. Genesis 34:1 shows that Dinah had the bad habit of associating with ungodly persons in the land of Canaan. She's raped, revealing their moral condition. Her brothers seek revenge and kill all the males by deceit. (34:25) Verses 30, 31 and 49:5-7 reveal Jacob's reaction. Incidently, God's view of the Amorites is revealed in Genesis 15:16. Onan is a single individual judged by God himself. Why? Genesis 38:8 tells us about Judah's command, as his father, to perform "brother-in-law marriage" to preserve the family line. Verses 9, 10 explain Onan's reaction to this command. (Compare Deuteronomy 25:9, 10.) He was concerned about the inheritance. So, for his diobedience, his covetousness and disrepect of the divine arrangement, he was judged worthy of death thus ending his family line, as he chose to do for Judah. |
