Hello byfaith, Rom 11:36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. To answer your question, byfaith, let's start with the general and then move to the specific. Generally, then, what was God's chief end in creating anything at all? I think the above verse speaks to this. The chief end of all creation is the glory of God. This is not to say that man does not benefit along the way, but the chief end of anything in creation, including man, is not the created thing, but the Creator. Rev 4:11 says, "Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created." "Because of Your will" means that God had a purpose in creating all things. He didn't just create and then sit back to see what would happen. By His plan and power His purpose in creating will see its end, because God "works all things after the counsel of His will." Eph 1:11 Now as to God's chief end in specifically creating man, 1 Cor 11:7 Paul says in passing, "For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man." Man then (male and female) is the image and glory of God. And the glory of God is the chief of man. One more thing. Because man is the image of God, he can glorify God in a way no other creature can. The image of God is spiritual; it is rationality. Because man is rational he has the capacity to obey, love and enjoy God. The first catechism question of the Westminster Confession of Faith expresses it beautifully: Q. What is the chief end of man? A. Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. And this is God's chief end in creating man. |
