bwhitt33, This web posting indicates it the two intertwined triangles has no scriptural roots. AMF International Mailbag Q: I am looking for information on the Star of David. Where did it come from -- what is its origin? Is there Judaistic symbolism in it? Do the rabbis accept it? Are there any major view points in it? A friend of mine said it originated from Solomon's reign (since it is also known as Solomon's seal). This friend stated that Solomon may have accepted it from a pagan wife's religion. Do you have any comments? A: The "Star of David" is known in Hebrew as Magen David (or Mogen David in Yiddish), which literally means "shield of David," apparently from the popular notion that the Beloved King of Israel wore this symbol on his shields, although there is no evidence that this is true. I doubt that either David or Solomon ever knew it. The symbol was used in Israel in Roman times (it can be seen in the remains of the synagogue at Capernaum), but it appears to have been nothing more than an architectural motif at that time. It seems to have become associated with Judaism in particular only in later centuries. According to one source at my disposal, earliest attested use by a Jewish person is from 7th century BC but it assumed importance as a distinctive Jewish symbol only from 17th century AD. Meaning can be read into any symbol, and rabbis have been known to base sermon illustrations on the Star, but its actual origin can only be guessed at.
