1 | You shall not Murder, then told too?? | OT general | TShea | 3182
EX20:13 You shall not murder. A command from God. Then the people get out of control in Ex 32:27 He said to them, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'Every man of you put his sword upon his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and kill every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.' " Question is Why would God Say not to Murder then turn around and tell them too? |

Is killing in self-defense justified? Does killing in self-defense or in time of war constitute a justifiable exception to God's rule (commandment)? I ask this question in all sincerity. This is not a trick question, or set-up or anything of the kind. I really want to know. Is any killing of any kind condoned in the New Testament? All reasonable answers would be appreciated. If you can quote Scripture to support your answer, so much the better, but for this one question this one time, a Scripture reference is not required, only preferred.
3 | You shall not Murder, then told too?? | OT general | SpreadWord | 3765
You ask for a New Testament example. I could give plenty from the Old Testament, but the best New Testament example I can find is Luke 22:36 where Jesus is admonishing His disciples to arm themselves with a sword. In fact, Jesus thought it was so important that if they did not have a sword, they should sell their garment in order to buy one. A sword was the self defense weapon of the day.

You have done well in providing a Scripture reference that, under the Old Testament period of the Law (the period in which Jesus had his earthly ministry), indeed condoned carrying a lethal weapon. As much as I do appreciate your answer, I'm not sure it is the definitive answer that applies to the NT era of Grace as opposed to Law. For example, after the resurrection and ascension of Christ into heaven, is there a clear verse of Scripture to indicate that any or all the Apostles carried or used lethal weapons?

A New Testament example was requested, and one was provided. Although I can not find *another* explicit reference, the points I would make are these: 1) I Tim 5:8 admonishes us to provide for those of our own house. I take provision to mean not only food, clothing, and shelter, but also protection from those who would do harm, whether man or beast. 2) Why would we assume that the admonition to carry the sword would end at the resurrection? Things such as the sacrifice of animals (that had been replaced by Jesus' ultimate sacrifice) are obvious as to why they are no longer done, but self-defense is not just a statute under the law. It is the preservation of human life, which God established from the creation, pre-dating Mosaic law. 3) An absence of a discussion about something in a post-law era does not negate its value within this age of Grace. Consider the error of the Church of Christ in prohibiting musical instruments just because they aren't mentioned in the New Testament.
