Greetings barbara doe! "The donkey saw the Angel of the LORD: Balaam was supposed to have been able to communicate with the gods through animals. However, in this situation, the "seer" was blind to the presence of the true God. It was the animal who was the seer, perceiving the true will of God in the Angel that blocked the path. ... The spiritually blind seer finally saw the majesty of the One whom the donkey saw all along." [The Nelson NKJV Study Bible, pg. 268, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1997] - Nolan |

Ed, Good question... The only connection that I can find is that Balaam used omens (Numbers 22:7; 24:1) and soothsaying (Josh. 13:22), and was a lover of money (vv. 17,22; 2 Peter 2:15). The Ryrie NASB Expanded Edition Study Bible offers this explanation, "22:28 Balaam did not seem surprised when God caused the donkey to speak (Gen. 3:1). Perhaps he had had previous experiences with animals speaking through demonic power." (pg. 249) - Nolan |
