First question do you have a call to ministry? Is there anything else you would be happy doing? If there is do it! Is this something you just can’t stop thinking about? Understand ministry is not a vocation, a profession, it isn’t a job, nor is it a career path, it must become your life style. You must be willing to eat, sleep, be totally consumed by it. If you answered yes to the first and third question and no to the second and understand and agree with the last statement. Then I tell you, talk to your Pastor, get his support, approval and guidance. You should get an education. You didn’t say what you wanted to do in ministry but most every denomination or independent work wants/requuires some training to enter most every field of ministry. Whether you like it or not, unfortunately the church is ran by humans and they judge by outside appearances. Therefore they look at credentials and academic achievements. If you have a denominational college consider attending since that will be a real advantage in your efforts to get accepted by others in the ministry. If you have more questions or I can help further in any way please ask. Ed |

Excellent question, Godgirl777! Ed gave you some excellent advice as well. Eight years ago, I was in the exact same position- just graduated from high school and immediately enrolled into a Christian college where I learned very many things about life, God, the Bible and myself. I realize that at this point you may be a bit skeptical, afraid of making the "wrong" choice, and thinking about your future. :) I was also like this, and I could also call myself a bit "reckless" at this point also. But I avoided the ministry like the plague!! My father is a minister and has always been. I remember the joy he felt when I told him that I was also studying for the ministry! I also remember the pain that crossed his face when he learned that I had indeed decided to transfer to a different school to pursue Computer Programming instead.. You must learn patience, my friend! Please don't jump to a conclusion just because that is 'what is expected of you'.. If feel that you are not suited or 'called' to be a pastor and to assume the demands of being a minister, then you should pray and ask the council of other Godly people who are older than you, so that the Lord can speak through their wisdom to tell you in what way you should go. I remember how I was at that age, and I just simply was not ready!! I had no idea at all the level of commitment that I needed, and I would have fallen flat on my face.. But the Lord has made me more mature now, and He has even made me into something of a person who could possible garner (or is now worthy of) some 'respect' from other people in spite of myself! I've learned to be a servant first, and it was not 'easy' I guarantee you. I've learned many things in these eight years that could only come through patience and time.. I've made my share of mistakes, lost many friends, and shown my stupidity time after time, only to show me where I was wrong and where I needed correction. And the Lord will show you those things about you also that you will 'need to know' before you assume this awesome responsibility of ministry! And the Lord will show you the path that you must take, my friend.. Has He failed to show you direction or to provide for you yet? Will He ever? Take care, my friend, and do not discount the awesome power of prayer!! Nolan |
