Asis It was done in Greek. The Greeks philosophy of conquest was to simulate their culture into that of the area they just conquered. After Alexander conquered the area, Greek became the common language. This is very important in the plan of things because Greek was nearly universally used in all the civilized world of the time. This made the documents of the New Testament universally available to all. As far as I know one part of Daniel was written in Aramaic, the rest of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew. Later translated in Greek known as the Septuagint. EdB |

So the common language of the disciples, Jews in Israel was Greek. Matthew and Mark and John were written in Greek? I can understand that Luke was written in Greek, but are you saying that the Book of Matthew, which is Jesus the culmination of the prophecies of the Old Testament was also written in Greek? Humph. What do you know. |

Asis Remember by this time the Old Testament was also written in Greek. Jesus probably read it in Greek. It was a poor man's Greek called Koine Greek. Aramaic and Hebrew was still used but the common language was Koine Greek. Today Israel uses Hebrew but that was decision that was made in the 1900's when so many Jews came from all over. They had to decide on a state language and since Hebrew was once their language they went back to it. In some cases words had to be invented as the actual Hebrew word was lost to them. This happened once before when Moses lead the children out of Egypt after their 400 of slavery. Many Hebrew words were forgotten and new ones had to be invented. EdB |

Do you think that the scroll of Isaiah Jesus was handed in the synagogue was written in Greek? I find it hard to believe that the Jews who would not associate with the gentile except for business purposes talked in greek as their common speach. But if it is so it is so. Having been brought up with the almost paranoid fear of being assimilated into the culture in which I lived and losing my Jewishness I wonder if it was different then. | ||||||
