EDB, Instead of me trying to defend my view, I'll just go off your notes. You stated "Upon His death Jesus went to Abraham's bosom side and preached the good news and lead those awaiting His arrival home Eph 4:8" Isa 38:18 For the grave cannot praise You, death can not rejoice in You; they who go down into the pit CANNOT HOPE FOR YOUR TRUTH. One little fact about the theif on the cross. You said that Jesus told the theif on the cross "today you will be with me in Paradise" But Jesus didn't rise from the dead till three days later, and even after that he didn't ascend to heaven until 30/60 days or something likethat. So was Jesus lying when he said "TODAY YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE"? What do 6000 years of Jewish teaching say about this. |

Mathew since we know Jesus couldn't lie and he definitely said today you will be with me in paradise then he evidently meant paradise or Abraham's bosom where He preached the Good News. also read Hebrews 9. It clearly says Jesus entered the Holy of Holies not built withthe hands of man and presented His blood. So evidently Jesus was in Heaven while his blood was still flowing. What do 6000 years of Jewish teaching says about this? Praise God the Messiah has come. EdB |

EDB, You are using a parable to state that Abrahams bosom is a real place. If it is, then whose bosom is Abraham in? And you also said, "he evidently meant paradise OR Abraham's bosom ". Note that there are only three scriptures in the whole Bible that mention the word PARADISE. Luk 23:43 And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, Today you SHALL BE WITH ME in Paradise. 2Co 12:4 that he was CAUGHT UP into Paradise and heard unspeakable words, which it is not allowed for a man to utter. Rev 2:7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat of the TREE OF LIFE, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. The bible used the word CAUGHT UP. This means in't can't be the GOOD SIDE OF HELL as some call it. And the tree of life is there. Hey, why dont't they just take a bite so they can live forever in Abrahams bosom. My point is Abrahams bosom is not Paradise. The dead sea scrolls don't have cammas. They put it in the wrong place. It should read. Luk 23:43 And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you today, you shall be with Me in Paradise. We all will someday. |

Lazarus and the Rich Man, Luke 16:19-31 'In Luke 16:19-31 is the story of Lazarus and the rich man. Basically, Lazarus is a poor man who suffers during life. The rich man is, of course, rich. They both die. The rich man goes to Hades. Lazarus goes to Abraham's bosom, another term for paradise. In Hades, the rich man lifts up his eyes and sees Lazarus far off. He cries out to Abraham and asks for mercy because he is in agony in flame. Abraham says no. Then the rich man asks if someone from the dead were to rise and go tell his brothers not to come to this terrible place. Abraham teaches him that that will not be done either. 'Some say that this is a parable. However, if it is, it is unique because no other parable actually names a person. It isn't a story. It is history. It really happened. But many who believe in no consciousness after death will say it is still a parable. The question then is, if it is, What is it teaching? If hell fire is false and if self-awareness after death is also false, then Jesus is using false doctrines to teach a truth. Parables illustrate truth. If it is a parable what does the consciousness after death symbolize? Also, what does the agony in flame symbolize? Are they not real? Of course they are. 'Conclusion 'Hell is a real place. It is not mere unconsciousness. It is not temporal. It is eternal torment. Perhaps that is why Jesus spoke more of hell than heaven and spent so much time warning people not to go there. After all, if people just stopped existing, why warn them? If it was temporal, they'd get out in a while. But if it were eternal and conscious, then the warning is strong. 'Jesus said, "And if your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out, and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30"And if your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off, and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to go into hell," (Matt. 5:29-30).' Radioman, "In Luke 16:19-31 is the story of Lazarus and the rich man/'Some say that this is a parable. However, if it is, it is unique because no other parable actually names a person. It isn't a story. It is history. It REALLY HAPPENED" IN RESPONCE TO THIS STATEMENT Jesus recognized the value of parables in teaching the people. He desired to stimulate their deepest thought and contemplation, and He knew if He spoke too literally, certain of His hearers would quickly forget His words. Not only that, but others, for whom certain of His parables contained stern rebuke, would be so angered by straight speaking that they would attempt to silence Him by violence. Wise as a serpent but harmless as a dove, Jesus recalled the words of Isaiah 6:9 and told His disciples, "Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: BUT TO OTHERS IN PARABLES; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand." Luke 8:10. Cruden's Concordance explains: "Our Saviour in the gospels often speaks to the people in parables. He made use of them to veil the truth from those who were not willing to see it. Those who really desired to know would not rest till they had FOUND OUT THE MEANING."It is appropriate here to ask to WHOM Jesus was speaking in Luke 16:19-31. Which category of people was He dealing with? The last verse before Jesus' voice begins in this passage tells us. Verse 14 says, "And the PHARISEESE also, who were covetous, HEARD ALL these things: and they derided him." Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees, a class of men who were notorious all through the gospels for their refusal to deal honestly with Him and the truths He taught. We can be sure that of all the people Jesus taught, none were handled more guardedly then the wily Pharisees. They dealt in deception and subterfuge, but Jesus dealt with them wisely and truthfully. The safest way for Him to do this was by PARABLE and ALLEGORY. Evidence that they did not understand many of His teachings can be found in Jesus' prayer in Luke 10:21, "I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast HID THESE THINGS from the WISE AND PRUDENT, and hath revealed them unto babes." Mark 4:33, 34 clearly shows that Jesus' lessons were almost invariably couched in parables: "And with many such parables spake he the word unto them: as they were able to hear it. BUT WITHOUT A PARABLE SPAKE HE UNTO THEM; and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples." Thank you for your comments: MATT |
