1 | Is Gambling a Sin? REf. Please | Bible general Archive 1 | Double Vision | 39626
Is gambling scriptural sin or just a sin created by man to make man more holy in mans eye? My wife and I were discussing Gambling today. And instinctively responded to a certain situation with it is wrong because the word says it is wrong. That answer troubled my spirit, having a fair knowledge of the word. And after some research found that the bible is quiet on this subject. With the exception of the casting of lots, in which God is in the middle of most all references to this item. Is our only response to this item in life to refrain from all appearance of evil, and is it evil, because of the doctrines of man and not God???

Hi Denise, To answer your question, you are correct, there does not appear to be any direct scriptural prohibtions against gambling. However, in my view I think we can make a fair case against it from 2 NT verses: Eph. 5:15-16 and James 4:17, 15 "Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil." 17 "Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin." We do have an example of betting by Samson in Judges 14:12-19 along with the practice of casting lots. Casting lots was primarily OT. The NT references in each of the Gospels are a fulfillment of OT prophecy!. Most prominently, we have the casting of lots in the choosing of Matthias to replace Judas in Acts 1:26. Interestingly, in my study, I've not been able to determine why the practice of "casting lots" was used. The Bible doesn't say. Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

Greetings BradK! Based on the reading I have done, the casting of lots may have originated with the two stones on the High Priest's breastplace - the Urim and Thummim. Num. 27:21 says, "He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.?" Many feel that these two stones may have been a system of 'lots' used to get 'yes' or 'no' answers from the Lord. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
