The Bible is not merely a way to "get" God's word; it is God's word. Prayer is vital, but without God's revelation of Himself in His word, we wouldn't know how to approach Him in prayer nor even know what prayer is. The Scriptures themselves give an impelling testament to their purpose and power. 2 Tim. 3:16,17: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Tim. 2:15: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." There is in these verses the clear teaching that God's word, the Bible, is absolutely indispensible to a knowledge of God and His revealed truth to mankind. And they cast the clear message that it is incumbent upon us to exert our best efforts -- to dig hard, if you will, because systematic Bible study means work and lots of it -- to "be diligent" to present ourselves to God as workers who do not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing (a term that literally means "to cut straight") His word of truth. John's whole purpose in writing the fourth Gospel was "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." If the Bible is as important as John said it is -- and it is! -- then we have every reason on earth to read it, mark it, learn it, and inwardly digest it. As our bodies need a regular supply of nourishing food of sufficient quantity to keep them alive and well, so also do our spirits need to feed on the eternal word of God. Prayer is a commandment, it is essential, it has its rightly place in our lives to be sure. But prayer is not the same thing as Bible study and is not a substitute for it. --Hank | ||||||
