This seems like such an important tenet of our belief - how can a theology of the afterlife develop like this? How did it develop? | ||||||

josh044 Actually the Jews did believe in an afterlife back to the time of Abraham as we see clearly stated in Hebrews 11:13-16. I think the reason Hell wasn't more clearly defined in the Old Testament was because the way of salvation was not yet completed. Both were held in the shadows until Christ came to explain both. Still Hell was mentioned in 32 verses. And the place where the dead go Sheol in 18 verses. To say the Jews did not know about the afterlife is not true, they were in fact looking for the Messiah. There was a group the Saduccees that, were like so many today, deny the reality of eternity and lake of fire. King David clearly showed his belief in the afterlife when he spoke of his dead son. 2 Samuel 12:23 But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me." I hope this helps EdB |
