Dear Nolan, I believe that babies and small children go to heaven when they die. My reasons are the following: 1. Although all are born with a sinful nature, these children have not sinned. God is just. 2. When David's adulterous affair with Bathsheba resulted in pregnancy, the Lord struck the child ill. David fasted and prayed. When the child died, David washed his face, ate food and annointed himself. When asked why he would do such a thing, David answered, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, "Who knows, the Lord may be gracious to me, that the child may live. But now he has died; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me." 2 Sam. 12:15-23. David believed his child to be in heaven, where he would follow when he himself died. I am comforted by this passage. I base my hope to see my children in heaven on this principle. |

Thank you all for your input that you have each put a lot of thought into and have researched, I appreciate answers on this subject that are based upon the Bible! I had always leaned towards the possibility that small children and infants that died very early would be taken to heaven since they had not yet reached the age of accountability. But that was just my own point of view until I asked the question, which you all have shed some much needed "light" upon! Thank you, and I pray that we can comfort those who may have lost their loved ones in the past. Blessings in Jesus! -Nolan

What is the criteria for going to heaven? IF babies go to heaven, is it conditional? ... then what about children? At was age are they destined for hell? At what age do they know the difference between right and wrong? Do the two ages make a difference? I was saved when I was four, did I believe too early? ... then what about those who never heard? Are they destined for hell? I have my thoughts - but I hope to hear from all of you. Steve |

Steve, to your first question, "What is the criterion for going to heaven?" my answer would have to reflect what Jesus said in John 14:6. Your second question about babies going to heaven being conditional is beyond my scope, because I'm not not sure what you mean by "conditional." Are you talking about election?....Your next question asks at what age do children know right from wrong? Since the concepts "right" and "wrong" may mean different things to different people, would you permit me to reword it thusly: "At what age are children able to respond in a meaningful way to the message of the Gospel of Christ?" Certainly no infant yet has this ability. At what point along the time line of his life a child attains this ability would vary, it seems to me, from child to child. There is no absolute rule of thumb that I know of....And to your final question, "Did I believe too early?" my answer must be that that is for you to say. --Hank
