Greetings Justwondering, Welcome to the Forum! Good question, and I hardly have a sufficient answer! :-) But I will give it my best effort.. The only situations in the Bible that hint at "mental illness" are when David pretends to be insane (1 Sam. 21:12-14), when Jesus was thought to have been out of His mind (Mark 3:20-21), when the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost (Acts 2:13), and when people were demon possessed (Luke 8:27). Of all of those examples, the only "legitimate" example is the last one, when people were demon possessed, that could best explain or help us come to some "biblical" reasoning behind such mental illnesses as schizophrenia. However, that is not to say that those who suffer from a "mental illness" are demon possessed. Generally, I believe that those who suffer from what is known as a "mental illness" are those who #1) were born that way, #2) became as such through a serious calamity or accident (whether gradual or immediate), #3) became as such because of environmental circumstances (which may also be the case of #2). And now, I have put on display my very limited expertise in the subject of "mental illness!" :-) But why are people born as such or why does God allow them to become as such? We will never know the answers to such questions, but I do know that we, as a whole, can work together to change the circumstances around us as to prevent such "mental illnesses" from developing or becoming even worse. With a little love and caring towards those who have this challenge, we can help to put our fellow brothers and sisters who are somewhat mentally 'deficient' into positions that they can handle and can contribute to the world as a whole. Everyone is useful, and no one is here by mistake! The best way for us to deal with a "mental illness" is to continue to think highly of life and of ourselves, to keep challenging our mental capacities, and to keep our relationship with Christ as strong as possible for as long as possible. I hope and pray that I have been of some assistance here, my friend. Blessings to you, Makarios |

Greetings again, Justwondering.. Please do not take any of the above information that I wrote as "solid" information.. You see, I "suffer" from an unusually "good" self-image of myself, and I exhibit that to everyone that I know.. I'm great with people, and I probably spend way too much time on my "appearance", or how I come across.. So, I guess that you could say that I am a somewhat mentally "unusual" person, but I am hardly an 'authority' on the subject, my friend! Blessings to you, Makarios |
