I wish I knew where the father has gotten an idea like that! Biblical references to music are numerous because of the essential role it played in all aspects of the life of the people of the bible. Since he said he is a New Testament Christian I will start in the New Testament. Music was important in the worship of the early church. In the earliest Christian communities music was not set within regular and repeated patterns of worship but was allowed some spontaneity. Eph. 5:19 says that "as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts". James 5:13 asks if any are cheerful, then they should sing songs of praise. 1Cor 14:26 says that when you come together and someone has a hymn let it be done for the building up. Col 3:16 says "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly....and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God. Both of these scriptures have to do with worshipping God and one of the places we are to do that is in church! Rev 4:10 talks about the 24 elders who fall on the floor and casting their crowns on the fllor before God sing! "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven". Exodus 15 talks or singing to the Lord. In Psalms alone sing and singing is mentioned 70 times!! Psalm 47:6 tells us to "sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to out King, sing praises! Psalm 81:1-2 tell us to "Sing aloud to God our strength...Raise a song, sound the tamborine, the sweet lyre with the harp." There are many more scriptures too numerous to mention. If this isn't enough go to the Strongs Concordance and look under sing. prayon |

The Church of Christ does not have musical instruments ... To them it is a matter of principle rather than of expediency. They have sought out the correct answer to the all-important question: "Does Jesus Christ authorize the use of instruments of music in the worship of God?" From their investigation of the divine word, they have concluded that there is neither command, percept, nor example for this practice. See: Matthew 17:5; 28:18; John 14:26; 1 John 4:6. Every single New Testament reference to music in divine worship pertains to singing only: Acts 16:25; Romans 15:9; 1Corinthians 14:15; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16; Hebrews 2:12; James 5:13. |

Hello, Eph 5 is about how to live life, not organized worship. Using the church of Christs way of reasoning, since musical instruments aren't mentioned here, we should never use them. Even outside of worship. I do not believe that God would find the same thing that is unnacceptable in worship, completely acceptable outside. Everything we do is to God's glory, not just in church. Just some thoughts. A command to do one thing is not a command to not do something totally different. For example, they say A command to sing is A command not to use instruments Instruments is not singing. Nothing is singing except singing. You could place any action that is not singing in place of musical instruments in my first equation. ex. A command to sing is A command not to close my eyes Closing my eyes is not essential to singing, nor is it part of everyday life, my eyes are generally open. It is in action completely unrelated to singing and unnecessary. So does it displease God if I sing with my eyes closed? There is no evidence in the entire Bible that musical instruments displease God. There is most likely more evidence to the contrary. The reason musical instruments is such an issue is because culturally and historically instruments often accompany singing. Since they were left out of the NT, it is assumed by some that this is an implied command not to use them. There is no proof or evidence this is true. To turn this into a command that people must follow is adding to the Bible, and some even add it to requirement of salvation. Adding laws where they do not exist does displease God. We have plenty of evidence of that. I do respect the desire to do what God wants. If this is why it is done then fine. Singing pleases God. But if it is a rule used to set apart a certain church as superior then I disagree fully. This is a point of view. Not gospel. No hard feelings are intended here. I see you believe in Jesus Christ and wish to obey him! And so do I. God be praised by both of us today! God be with you Dan |
