Thanks for your reply, Searcher. That comment wasn't in the Bible itself, but in the notes (I was reading the Life Application Bible). And now I can't find it again... But since we're on the subject, what *do* you believe it means to give a situation or an object or a question over to the Lord? Does it mean to not do anything about it? And in the case of sacrifices, don't they involve some sort of destruction, in the case of the OT laws? What about fasting? (I realize I'm wandering all over the board here, but to me there's a common denominator in all of these questions.) Why would it please God to have us give up a legitimate good for a time, for His "sake"? What does that do for Him, if such a question can even be asked? Thanks, --Cheryl |

Scripture ... Exo 13:11-13; 1 Sam 1:28; 1 Cor 5: 5 ... Cheryl, In the NASB, "Now when the LORD brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as He swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, you shall devote to the LORD the first offspring of every womb, and the first offspring of every beast that you own; the males belong to the LORD. But every first offspring of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem" (Exo 13:11-13). The NIV says, "Give over to the Lord", in place of "devote to the LORD". So I see that it is not destruction. This is what Hannah did with Samuel (1 Sam 1:28). The only passage I can think of giving over for destruction is 1 Cor 5: 5 ... and that is to Satan. So I see two points where I have a problem with what you read. It is good, no great, that you ask to see if what is said, is Biblical (Acts 17:11). Hope this helps, Searcher |
