Hello fellow brother's and sister's! This is my first post, and my question is this; How important is it to know scripture, ie., book, chapter and verse. I can recall what what is being said in scripture, but not one to remember ch. and verse. I consider myself a good student of the Word, but as I said, not good at remembering verses. Just thought I ask, before interacting with others and get bombarded with, SHOW ME WHERE. Well I wait expecting! God's Grace to All. inmyheart |

Greetings Inmyheart! Welcome to the Forum! I was blessed as a teenager to have an older Christian who served as a mentor for me. His name was Harry Handshue. I literally used to sit at his feet after school and listen as he shared about Scripture. One of the best things he ever taught me was to memorize Scripture. Fortunately, I have been blessed with a nearly photographic memory. But, over the years, I have learned that memorization comes easier with practice. Here are some tips which will help. 1) Use cards to help with memorization. One can buy these or with computers, one can even print them at home. I make memory cards of key verses each week for my Sunday School class. The best method is to build up to about 10 verses. Keep them in your pocket and whenever you get a free moment, run the verses through your mind. I like to do this while I'm working. As soon as you get the 10 cards memorized, take the one you know best out and add a new one. Keep doing this until you have about 10 cards in the learned pile and then go over them to refresh your memory. 2) Learn common and key verses first. John 3:16 and 1 John 1:9 are verses which everyone should know. 3) Finally, the best advice I can give is to learn whole segments or even chapters of Scripture. It is much easier to memorize verses in context. For instance, I learned the Sermon on the Mount a couple of years ago. It was not as difficult as I even thought it would be. As you work your memory, it will improve. Now, concerning the Forum. You don't have to memorize Scripture to comment on it. However, you do need to make sure your statements are Biblical. This means that they will need to be supported with Scripture. If you need to find a verse in Scripture a good concordance will help. Or, one can use Bible software. Or, there is even a searchable Bible to the right of the screen on this Forum. Simply enter the word, or words, you are looking for and it will find them. Good luck and I look forward to interacting with a new Christian friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
