1 | Are the added bits inspired? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ian | 23380 | ||
Several passages in the bible (especially the gospels) do not appear in early manuscripts (eg. end of Mark and a chapter of John which I can't remember at the moment- maybe someone else can). It is therefore doubtful that they were written by the original authors. Should we still look upon these parts as inspired by the Holy Spirit? |

Greetings Ian! This is an excellent question. Allow me to attempt an answer in the following way! 1) Not all writings are inspired! The 66 books included in the canon of Scripture are those which have been accepted by the church as being inspired. 2) Only the originals were inspired! Most believe that the originals were inspired. This is a bit of problem since we don't have any of the originals. 3) Therefore, scholars attempt to recreate the originals from the copies that we have. The good news is that they are about 99.999999 percent sure that we have the correct text in the Bible. Most variant readings deal with very minor issues like word order or spelling. The text is not really indispute. 4) However, there are several passage which are very much in dispute. The long ending of Mark is one. There is also a long section in John (7:53-8:11) which is disputed. How do we handle these sections? My best advice is to take them with a grain of salt! I would never build a doctrine based upon a verse from such a highly disputed passage. Where they are in agreement with the rest of Scripture, I would say that they can be treated as inspired. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
