1 | Did Jesus spend 3 days in hell? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 16686 | ||
The word that is translated hell means the holding place for those that died before Christ. Jesus painted a picture of this in the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. One side of it is Abraham’s bosom or Paradise where the righteous that died dwelt and on the other a hot dry place where the unrighteous that died dwelt. Jesus upon his death went to Abraham’s bosom or Paradise and preached the Good News, He then lead captivity captive and took them to His father in Heaven. Jesus at this time took His blood and presented it before the Altar in the Tabernacle of the Lord which is in heaven as seen in Hebrews 9. When we die we no longer go to Abraham’s bosom but rather directly to heaven as Paul told us to be absent from the body is present with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:8 The unrighteous souls in the hot dry place remain there until the Great White Thorn of Judgement at which point they will be thrown into the Lake of Fire. No Jesus did not spend 3 days in hell, his body spent three days in the grave only to arise again on the third day. This fantasy that Jesus went to hell and wrestled with the devil is nonsense. First of all the Satan isn’t in hell, he is on the earth roaming like a lion seeking those to destroy. Jesus didn’t go down to hell to be tormented by the Satan since hell isn’t a place where Satan or his demons torment people, besides they want nothing to do with hell anymore than we do. |

Good teaching here, bro! Jesus was glorified on the cross not in the grave! When He said “It is finished” He meant ”It was finished”, NOT “I going to hell now to get beat up some more!” I agree with what you said of Jesus going to Paradise and declaring the Good News (1Pe 4:6) and then took the captives to heaven (Eph 4:8). What's your thoughts concerning Acts 2:31 that says “His soul was not left in Hades”? How or does that tie in with 1Pe 3:19 that says “He went and preached to the spirits in prison”? How or does that tie in with Phi 2:10 that says “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those UNDER the earth”? Does this mean Jesus went to Hades, along with going to Paradise, and proclaimed the Gospel? Thanks, retxar |

Rextar Hell or Hades changed dramatically after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Before it was the resting place of both he righteous (paradise side or Abraham’s bosom) and the unrighteous ( traditional hell hot dry place). After the Cross and resurrection Hades became the holding place for only the unrighteous. Abraham’s bosom no longer existed, everyone that was held there was lead captive by Christ to Heaven. In Acts 2:31 Luke is still referring to the pre resurrection Hades that contained both righteous and unrighteous. 1 Pet 3:19 tells us again that Jesus went to the pre resurrection Hades where he preached the Good News. Phil 2:10 I believe is a picture of the second coming of Christ where every “creature” will kneel and confess Jesus is LORD. |
