1 | May I baptize? | Bible general Archive 1 | Jensen | 16639
It seems to me that anyone who goes out to "make disciples of all nations" has the authority to baptize. If I, for whatever reason, do not belong to a local church, then according to your logic the Great Commission would not apply to me. I am relieved of the responsibility to present the Gospel since I do not belong to a local church. That just does not sound correct to me. I do believe, as a Bible believing Christian, that I have a command to try to save people. Perhaps I just do not understand what your note means. It would not be the first time I had a wrong interpretation.

Greetings Jim! As a pastor, I would basically agree with you with one small disclaimer. There is only one command in the Great Commission, "make disciples". The other verbs are all participles describing the process, "while going..., teaching..., and baptizing....". There isn't any Scripture in the Bible that designates who baptizes. So I would agree that any believe can baptize. However, baptism is usually part of the process of identifying a new believer with a local church body. So, normally I would say it should be done by the pastor or staff. However, I would not say this is an ironclad rule. In fact, in the churches where I have pastored, I have always tried to create teams of believers who would go into nursing homes and homes to administer communion. This is typically since as a pastoral duty, but I tried to expand it. In the same way, I usually have lay leader assist me in baptisms as well. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Many beleive one of the sins of the Nicolaitans was their desire to exalt clergy over laity. I'm not saying any of you are Nicolaitans but I see no where in the Bible that says Baptism is anything other than Baptism or that it has to be done by any special person. As I answered Louder if both are believers and he feels God is giving him the permission to do so, then he should go for it. |

Greetings EdB! Maybe I didn't make myself clear! :-) I agree, with one small disclaimer! Baptism serves as an intitiation rite into the church, so I would see it as best if the pastor and or staff does the baptizing. However, I don't see it as being mandatory that a pastor does it.
