The 144,000 are those that have accepted the seal of God and not the mark of the beast. The "great tribulation" (symbolzed here by the four winds) will not fall upon the earth until the 144,000 have been sealed (Rev. 7:1-4). Since Revelation is a book of symbols and a "Jew" is a symbol of a true christian (Rom. 2:28-29 and Gal. 3:7 and 28-29) then I would say that once the great tribulation starts that there will be only 144,000 "true christians" left alive on the earth. Read these other texts to help you understand Rev. chapter 7: Ps. 37:37-40; Ezek. chapter 9; Joel chapter 2; Isa. 8:16 (so Heb. 8:10-11); Eph. 1:13 and 4:30; II Tim. 2:19. Anyway, I hope this helps you some. |

Another explaination I have heard is that the 144,000 are actually Jews (12000 from each tribe of the 12 tribes of Israel). We have to be careful and realize that some things are symbolic but not all things have to be and that some things that we take as literal do not have to be. A lot in Revelation we will just have to wait and see which interpretation is correct!:) Debbie |

The problem with the number is that it is clearly symbolic, but the question is, Symbolic of what? Three major scholarly options have been given. The first is that this figure is symbolic of a group of Jews whom God will redeem at the end of the age. The second is that this is symbolic of a group of martyrs whom God preserves for martyrdom. The third is that this number is symbolic of the whole of the church, which God will protect through the tribulation at the end of the age. Only an examination of the data will show which of these is most likely to be correct. (Walter C. Kaiser, Hard Sayings of the Bible, Page 761 (Downers Grove, Il: InterVarsity, 1997, c1996). What about a fourth: That there will only be 144,000 "true christians" alive during the tribulation? Aren't all numbers used literally, even if associated with a symbol? What about the FOUR beasts of Dan. 7? The TEN horns of Dan. 7; Rev. 12; 13; 17 and 18 ? What about the "70" weeks of Dan. 9 ? All these numbers are literal even though associated with a symbol. How do you know that there will be MORE than 144,000 of the saved left alive on the earth at this time? |
