Greetings, Smyrna is known as the persecuted church. The city was loyal to Rome and participated in emperor worship. In the letter the church at Smyrna recieved an accomendation. Verse 9 says "I know your works". They were works of the spirit resulting from faith and not works purely in the flesh. They showed faithfulness int he midst of tribulation and poverty. This letter and the one to Philidelphia were the only ones that had no rebuke in them. This letter was more of an encouragement to stand strong in their faith amidst the persecution they were facing and were going to face. There were given the promise of the crown of life and to not be hurt by the second death for staying strong. prayon |
