2 | Who were the Nicolaitans? | Rev 2:6 | prayon | 9054
Good Question! Little is known about this group aside from the biblical references. They were a sect present in the churches of Ephesus and Pergamum. From the context of Rev 2:15, it would appear that they were people who abused Paul's doctrine of Christian liberty. It is believed that Jude 4 refers to them also. They appear to have attended the heathen rites and shared in the abominations there practised. Some say that they were followers of Nicolas of Antioch, one of the seven original elders, but if so, they falsely claimed that he taught such things so it is probable that it was some other Nicolas. It is possible that they were one in the same with the followers of Balaam (v. 14) because they both had a similar etymology "to conquer the people". prayon
3 | Who were the Nicolaitans? | Rev 2:6 | Searcher56 | 9071
Prayon ... Good answer. There were these groups (sects) in the churches that were preaching another gospel (Gal 1:10). I am not sure the Nicolaitans were in the church of Ephesus, since they were hated. So they went north to Pergamum. Steve
