1 | Did Christ die the "second" death for us | Rev 20:14 | palaurin | 18447
I am new to the church and I feel that Christ died for our sins. He is our substitue, so in being our substitute, He died the "second" death, the death we deserve. A guy in our congregation says that if Christ died the "second" death, He would be no more, the same as those who will die this death at Christ's 'third' return to this earth. Is he right? I know I may be mistaken, but what are the Bible answers for the TRUTH? I am not familiar with the Bible to know where things are. I would like these answers by Wed, as we have prayer meeting and it will be good to discuss. (It came up last week at this meeting). Thank you, Peter Laurin |

2 | Did Christ die the "second" death for us | Rev 20:14 | Morant61 | 18448
Greetings Peter! You are to be commended for a very teachable attitude. We should always examine our beliefs in light of Scripture. To answer your question, your friend at church is correct. The "second death" is mentioned four times in the NIV. 1) Rev. 2:11 - "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death." 2) Rev. 20:6 - "Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years." 3) Rev. 20:14 - "Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death." 4) Rev. 21:8 - " But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”" The last two references are the most important concerning your question. The "second death" is a reference to the final judgement of all those who reject Christ. It is literally what we think of when we use the term "Hell." You are correct that Christ died as our substitute. However, He has not been nor will He be consigned to an eternity in hell. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

3 | Did Christ die the "second" death for us | Rev 20:14 | bannal | 18517
palaurin, Jesus Christ overcame the second death! Hell has no power over Him, and he has not went to hell, no will he go to serve a sentence for you and I. Jesus overcame the first death (mortal body dying) and as much as I read in the bible, he will be judging the second death. Two of the same verses Tim brought out in the King James are: Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Jesus did not experience the second death. God Bless! |
