Was Charles Russell Founder of JWs? Was Charles Russell The Founder of The Jehovah's Witnesses? 'Charles Taze Russell 'Watchtower founder, Charles Taze Russell once sued a Baptist pastor, Rev. J.J. Ross for libel after the minister published a tract entitled, Some facts about the Self-Styled "Pastor" Russell (Kingdom of the Cults, pp. 42-44).' (www.watchman.org/jw/jwcourt.htm) 'In his six volumes, Studies in the Scriptures, Charles Taze Russell (founder of the Jehovah’s Witnesses) made many predictions that were tied to specific dates (e.g., 1878, 1910, 1915).' (www.apologeticspress.org/articles/280) _____ 'We along with the many Christian counter-cult ministries believed that Charles Taze Russell was the founder of the Jehovah's Witnesses. This is entirely based on the many major teachings of Russell that are being held by the whole Watchtower organization. Kindly read the following statement written in their book Jehovah's Witnesses Proclaimers of God's Kingdom, p. 42, in presenting a whole chapter on the history of their founder C.T. Russell, '"This history is of special interest to Jehovah's Witnesses. Why? Because their present understanding of Bible truths and their activities can be traced back to the 1870's and the work of C.T. Russell and his associates, and from there to the Bible and early Christianity." 'In spite of the fact that this is a bone of contention between the cults, International Bible Students' Association and the Jehovah's Witnesses, we leave the burden of proof to the former in disproving this historical fact. God bless you!' (www.thebereans.net/fb-jwalan.shtml) _____ '...it wasn't until the late 1800's that Charles Taze Russell began what is now known as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society which is run out of Brooklyn, New York. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Charles Taze Russell, (February 16, 1852 - October 31, 1916), known as Pastor Russell, was an American evangelist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who founded what is known as the Bible Student movement. He is known for founding the religious journal "Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence" in 1879, as well as one of the first Bible Societies in America, Zion's Watch Tower Tract Society, in 1881. A schism in 1917 resulted in the formation of the present-day movements known as Bible Students and Jehovah's Witnesses. Depends on how one interprets things. JWs came out of his movement, but he technically did not found them. Bows44 |

Bows44, whom are you defending -- Charles Taze Russell or the Jehovah's Witnesses? Grace to you, Kalos |

Kalos, I'm not defending anyone. Just trying to share the truth. If one promotes faleshoods, then unbelievers have a hard time believing the truth. We must be careful to post only that which is proven fact. If I am defending anything it is truth. My research shows that there is a descrepancy in the information regarding Mr. Russell. I am just trying to show that there is a descrepancy. Why is it so important for you to finger this man as the founder? Isn't it more important to discuss the falsehoods promoted by JWs and the truth of the Gospel than to get stuck on who did or did not start the cult? Especially when that person is dead and can't speak for himself? It happened to be a little bit of an issue to me as my maiden name is Russell and my father used to work real hard against the JWs when I was growing up. I was researching for personal reasons and chose to share the descrepancy in the info posted by Doc. I happen to trust the Wikepedia since they don't have an agenda and just try to give out as accurate information as possible without bias. Personally, I really don't care what you or anyone else believes about Mr. Russell. It certainly isn't worth arguing over. So why don't we just drop it? O.K.? Hope this helps, Bows44 |

Hi Bows, Well, it doesn't help me:-( We can just drop it, but I'm still a bit unsettled about your alledged discrepancy with Doc. There seem to be some inaccuracies in your portrayal of the facts. Was the late Dr. Walter Martin in his definitive work, "The Kingdom of the Cults" merely promoting an agenda? Not to argue, but I'm puzzled as to why you took the time and effort to dispute the matter if it's not worth discussing? It's not absolutley crucial to argue, yet it goes to the entire basis of the Watchtower and their theology- deceit! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hi BradK, Wasn't aware you needed help. Haven't read Dr. Walter Martin's "The Kingdom of the Cults" so I can't comment on that. See note to Hank. Hope this helps, Bows44 |
