1 | Brothers and sisters | Jude 1:4 | Atterbury | 231215
Are all Christians who believe that Jesus is Gods only son and rose from the dead for our salvation our brothers and sisters in Christ? Is there a certain way we should treat each other?

Hi, Atterbury... Only God can add to our number brothers and sisters (John 1:13). Our ranks are full of both wheat and tares. For example, one must be extremely careful about offering assurance when it may be the Holy Spirit Himself that is drawing someone to the Cross (Job 15:25-27). Each person needs to be dealt with in a specific and often unique fashion. The Scripture calls us to examine ourselves to be sure that we are of the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5). Assurance of salvation must be rooted in how the Word describes the redeemed (James 1:23-24), not because a person recited a prayer sometime in the past (Matthew 7:22-23) -- or even if they say they believe something. Even in a child, evidence of regeneration will result in observable fruit. John, in his first epistle, tells us that every believer will manifest love -- love of the Father, love the brethren, and love the Word. Why not work through another good set of passages (John 14 and 15) to compile a list of all the characteristics of a disciple of Christ. You can even report what you find back here to all our benefit (1 Corinthians 1:25). In Him, Doc |

3 | Brothers and sisters | Jude 1:4 | Atterbury | 231220
Hi Doc, I read through your passages, thank you for suggesting them. I learned that Jesus said we did not choose God but he chose us to go and bear good fruit that would last. Also that he comands us to love one another and that the father himself loves us because we we loved and believed Jesus came from God. I learned in Galantians that the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. I also learned in Galatians that if you keep biting and devouring each other watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. I also learned what the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. I hope my report is beneficial.

Dear Atterbury, I was hoping you'd come out of John 14 and 15 with about 30 attributes. The fruit of the Spirit has nothing to do with the world's definition of these things. For example, sometimes the most loving thing we can do for people is to rebuke, correct, and retrain. Iron sharpens iron. It is not all warm and fuzzy. Applying the truth to a situation can be highly painful. Nevertheless, failing to correct ungodly behavior is not a matter of love, but a matter of hatred (e.g., Proverbs 13:24). The Puritans used to say, "Being kind to the wolves is being cruel to the sheep." In Him, Doc |

Hi doc, Im sorry I did not know you were looking for a certain answer, I promise I will try and be more diligent in the future.I thought I would just give the one Jesus thought was the one that sums everything up. I found something interesting and scary in the Bible. In James 4, it says Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgement on it. There is only one lawgiver and judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you-who are you to judge your neighbor. Scary stuff.

Hi, Atterbury... Again, careful of adopting worldly definitions to terms. Find out what is the biblical definition of judging. Also, if you are concerned that someone is being slandered, then show kindness to the people involved by pointing it out -- with proof -- so that the truth can be known. Yes, we deal with a Lord who will not be trifled with. Let us seek to honor Him fully in all we do and say, but also to honor Him not neglecting anything He says. If you speak peace and safety, in God's name, when it is not from the Lord, then you do so at your own peril (Jeremiah 23:10-32). In Him, Doc |
