1 | What commandments? Torah? yes-no? | 2 John 1:6 | MJH | 140380
I've read this many times, but it caught me a bit by surprise this time. It seems to be saying that we ought to walk according to the Torah, or the Mosaic Law. 1 John 2:4-6 also says, Whoever says "I know him" but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. We know that Jesus walked according to the Torah--as it ought to have been interpreted. These texts seem to be saying that the commandments of the Mosaic Law were to be "walked" the way Jesus "walked" them. The phrase, "just as you have heard from the beginning" seems to suggest this as well. Then what are the commandments of Jesus, if they are not His "yoke" or His interpretation of the Torah? And His interpretation always came out of love, but it was still centered on the Torah (first 5 books). What am I missing? MJH |

Greetings MJH! All praise and glory and honor be to God our father who created all things and to his only begotten son Jesus Christ our Lord! I haven't participated in the forum for almost a year but have checked in from time to time. I don't think that I am really answering your question but these scriptures came to mind. I'm going to track this question to see what type of answers you get. I am interested myself because this question has come to my mind too. John 15:12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. John 15:14 "You are My friends if you do what I command you. Gal 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Gal 3:24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. Gal 3:25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. Gal 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Gal 5:14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." Many blessings to you in Christ Jesus, Cyclist I will bless the Lord at all times! His praise shall continually be in my mouth! |

3 | God's Law vs. Man's Law | 2 John 1:6 | Scott P | 140395
Gal 5:14 say's the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, LOVE. Does that mean that the Law is done away with? Jesus plainly says in Mat 5:17-18 that he did not come to destroy the Law. Gal 5:14 is saying all of God's Laws can be summed up with the word, Love. God is love, so His Law is Love. His Law is not done away with because of Love. There seems to be a great confusion about the difference between God's Law and man's law. God never changes, man does change
4 | God's Law vs. Man's Law | 2 John 1:6 | octoplus | 140412
Paul was talking in the context of our relationship with fellowmen which is governed by love. Remember that our Lord had summed up in Mark 12:29-31 the greatest commandment is to love God and second is to love our neighbour - men. You are quite right in that if we can practice "agape" love in our daily life, law will be fulfilled. Law is still there for those who may have wronged, but if we can pratice love (see 1 Pet 4:8) it covers multitudes of sins. we have no fear of the law because in 1 john 4:18 there is no fear in love. ... octoplus, Praise be to the Lord our God, His love and mercy endureth forever! Liked your post! I would like to add this scripture. Rom 13:8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. Rom 13:9 For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Cyclist I will bless the Lord at all times! His praise shall continually be in my mouth! |
