In 1 John 5:8, what does the 'water' mean or have reference to? I don't believe it means baptisim. | ||||||

The "water" as a reference to the baptism of Jesus by which His public ministry was initiated [testified to, (v. 6b. 7)] (Matt 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22). The "blood", also seen in verse 6, would then refer to His death, by which His earthly work was terminated (John 19:33-37). The Spirit testfies that He came by water and blood, because He is truth (vs 6) ... so with the blood and water it is made stronger. Verses 7-8 are in controversy ... and refer to the the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit. I hope I didn't confuse you, Steve |
