1 | 1 John 5:7 Adding to the Bible? | 1 John 5:7 | happyandfree | 156455
First - I'll start by saying that I am a believer. I trust in God and in the Bible. My faith is strong no matter what. I've read the comments on this forum regarding this scripture and I don't beleive it should be included in ANY Bible since it isn't at all what John wrote. Isn't the Bible suppose to give us the exact letters that were written? This makes me think . . . What else has been added to the Bible? I don't know Greek and Hebrew. I have to trust those that translated it. Things like finding additions to God's Word is exactly how we end up with cults that say our Bible is translated incorrectly and so they go off on some weird belief and drag thousands with them. I'm not a theologian but I've been taught to trust that the Bible is God's word. However, How can I trust mere man that translates it?

Hi, happy... The science of textual criticism is just that... a science. It is extremely disciplined, rigorous, and precise. Another discipline, although somewhat less precise (almost an art, really), is translation. Every translation necessarily implies a certain amount of interpretation. For example, there was no punctuation in the original manuscripts. Translators add that sort of thing in an effort to be as true to their approach as possible. However, these things are also open to criticism by others. Since this is a question that arises among skeptics all the time, it behooves us to do some research to find out how these disciplines are carried out. You will be quite surprised at how well it is done! Once again, the providence of God preserves His Word in very definite and clearly discernable ways. In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc: Thanks for the answer? I'm not sure if I got an answer actually. I understand that punctuation needed to be added, but adding entire sentences? Who had the athority to do that and who did it? The Bible clearly states that nothing should be added or removed - Rev 22 18-19.

Hi Happy and Free, Of the 1000's of extant Bible manuscripts, not all, unfortunately, agree. Some have extra words and sentences, some are missing words and sentences. Errors and changes have crept in. The textual criticts Doc was referring to have that awesome job of trying to determine which were the original words of God, and they, also unfortunately, do not always agree. If this were The Adventures of Sinbad, so what? But since it's the Bible, God's Holy Word, upon which we base our entire lives and eternity, it is important to understand how we got our Bible, and the different versions, and to prayerfully choose which to read and study. All of that notwithstanding, I like what the King James translators wrote in their preface, "Even the meanest (poorest) translation is still the Word of God." It is the Holy Spirit Who speaks to us, not just ink on paper. Thanks Mark. This kind of thing is exactly what I need. I feel the need to research in depth. Mostly, because I started talking to a girl that is in one of the largest cults in North America and I need to be sure of my own Bible before I can possibly witness to her in love.

You may do well to get a book or two specifically about the particular cult. It could save you some time in research. I am not trying to discourage you from researching the history of the Bible, that is a great thing to. If you call 1-800-272-WORD, they have a wide variety of material that may be useful to you. God Bless!!! Love in Christ, Mark |
