1 | Matched pronouns: Truth or truth? | 1 John 3:19 | Ray | 69079
1 John 3:19 speaks about being of the truth. But it goes on and talks about assuring our hearts before Him. Which do you think is more accurate or appropriate? Would you capitalize Truth since it is talking about Him? Or, would you translate the Greek as "it" talking about truth? From the heart, Ray |

2 | Matched pronouns: Truth or truth? | 1 John 3:19 | EdB | 69081
Ray None of the translations I use capitalize the word 'Truth" here, but I'm of the opinion that is should be capitalized since I believe it is talking of Jesus rather than of truth itself. My thoughts EdB |

3 | Matched pronouns: Truth or truth? | 1 John 3:19 | Ray | 69084
Hi EdB, It definately is talking about truth itself, whether capitalized or not; for Jesus is called the Truth, and the Way and the Life because He is those things. He is called the Light of the world because He enlightens every man and He came AS light. But in saying that Truth should be capitalized you seem to agree with me that the pronouns should agree with each other regarding capitalization. I want to make the word "it" denoting "truth" because I want to show the Truth Himself in verse 16. 1 John 3:16, "We know the love [of God, see the Greek] by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren." Hi EdB, The passage is about the love of God. God showed love for us in that He laid down His life for us. We also on the other hand should lay down our lives for our brethren. This goes beyond word; we are to love in deed and in truth. If we do this, that is lay down our life for them, we will know that we love them. If that is not required of us, and/or we wonder if we would be able to do that, God knows our hearts and knows all things. But we have confidence with God. 1) But in regards to my last paragraph, I wanted to point out that the love of God/ was shown when He laid down His life for us. 1 John 3:17, "But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of (God) abide in him?" Parenthesis mine. 2) John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He/ gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in (Him) should not perish, but have eternal life." 3) John 7:4, KJ, "For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly." My penciled in personal copy, "For no One/ does anything in secret, when He Himself seeks to be know publicly. If (You) do these things,..." 4) In my previous post with its last paragraph, I was infering to my own personal system which would require an either/or decision. If I chose to capitalize Truth because of the translation of "Him", then for my personal study it would have one pronoun too many. In other words, my personal study is one in which the books of the Holy Bible have total pronouns of Deity adding up to a number divisible by three. You might remember past discussions on the forum about this, for instance the discussion of the High Priestly prayer of John 17 being divisible by three. If I choose to translate the word Him as "it", and leave the truth uncapitalized; then numberwise I can include the love [of God] which is in the Greek. For afterall, the passage is about the truth of the love of God. 5) As I have said in the past, this is my own personal study throughout many years and has been meaningful for me. I praise God that He is a triune God. I praise the Word in that He would be able to show His triune Oneness in this way in the Scriptures. People have come to God without having to count pronouns and I certainly would not encourage people to do as I do without warning them of the cost in time, etc., etc. And we have no proof of the correctness of our choices other than being divisible by three, other than some other things to my mind. So, take all my suggestions "for what they are worth". From the heart, Ray |
