1 | Truth or truth? I suggest truth to you. | 1 John 3:19 | Ray | 66388
This question concerns capitalization of the Truth. The Amplified version connects the Truth with His presence. I agree that the two words should be in agreement; in other words, I believe that if the NASB has "our heart before Him" then it should have Truth capitalized. However, I would like to suggest another way to understand this verse. May I have your reactions to this my personal rendering of 1 John 3:19, "We shall know by this that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts with that same truth." 1 John 3:20,21, NKJ, "For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God." Please consider Strong's #1715 in verse 19 before answering. From the heart, Ray |

2 | Truth or truth? I suggest truth to you. | 1 John 3:19 | Hank | 66428
Ray, compare John 14:6. "I am the way, the truth, and the life." All three words -- way, truth, and life -- refer to Jesus, of course. They are nouns, but they are not names for Jesus. In English, nouns can be, and in this illustration, are used as modifiers -- functioning more like adjectives than nouns. Neither the NKJV or the NASB capitalizes 'way, truth, and life' in John 14:6; and neither version capitalizes 'truth' in 1 John 3:19. Both capitalize 'He' which is a personal prounoun that refers to Jesus. Both versions, as you know, always capitalize personal prounouns that refer to any member of the Trinity. I believe the translators of both versions were consistent and correct in their approach to capitalization. --Hank
3 | Truth or truth? I suggest truth to you. | 1 John 3:19 | Ray | 66441
Hi Hank, Thanks for writing. I also believe that the translators are correct in their approaches to capitalization. But I don't believe that they are always consistent. As you know, I love both versions. Many versions have renderings of "the Way, the Truth, and the Life" as does one Interlinear copy I use. I would not be surprised to see the NASB and NKJ have them capitalized in future copyrights. You are aware of the changes of the word "light" in the last NASB copyright? Many of the changes match my "penciled in" capitalization notes. For instance, they now capitalize "I am the (Light) of the world" in John 8:12 and John 9:5. I agree with those changes but do not agree with their capitalization of Ephesians 5:8,9. Ephesians 5:6ff, "Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of (God) comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them; for you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the *Lord; walk as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth) trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord." Lamentations 3:1, "I am the man who has seen affliction, Because of the rod of His wrath. He has driven me and made me walk in darkness and not in light. Surely against me (He) has turned *His hand Repeatedly all the day." John 8:12, "Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the (Light) of the world; he who follows *Me shall not walk in the darkness but shall have the Light of life." ****[I lean toward having the light of Life]. John 8:13, "The Pharisees therefore said to Him, "You are bearing witness of Yourself; Your/ witness is not true." John 14:4, "And where I go you know, and the Way/ you know." Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where (You) are going; how do we know the Way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life,/..." ***Capitals, parentheses, and slashes of course are mine here for comparisons. John 9:5, "While I am in the world, I am the (Light) of the world." I hope that these comparisons are of interest. I would also appreciate any comments on my post #66289. Best wishes to you Hank. From the heart, Ray |
