1 | The Righteousness of Lot | 2 Pet 2:7 | Makarios | 34138 | ||
Greetings all! Here is an interesting quote concerning the righteousness of Lot from the MacArthur Study Bible, page 1955. "2:7,8 delivered righteous Lot. He was righteous, as all the saved are, by faith in the true God. Righteousness was imputed to him, by grace through faith, as it was to Abraham (Gen. 15:6; Rom. 4:3,11,22,23). There was spiritual weakness in Lot (Gen. 19:6), e.g., immorality (Gen. 19:8) and drunkenness (Gen. 19:33-35). His heart was in Sodom (Gen. 19:16), yet he did hate the sins of his culture and strongly sought ways to protect God's angels from harm. He obeyed the Lord in not looking back at Sodom (Gen. 19). In both of the illustrations where God rendered a wholesale judgment on all living people (once on the whole earth, and once in the whole region of the plain South of the Dead Sea), Peter pointed out that God's people were rescued (v.5; cf. v.9). The Greek word for "oppressed" implies that Lot was troubled deeply and tortured (the meaning of "tormented") with the immoral, outrageous behavior of the people living in and around Sodom and Gomorrah. Tragically, it is ordinary for believers today no longer to be shocked by the rampant sin in their society." Dear Makarious, Althought it is "ordinary for believers today no longer to be shocked by the rampant sin in their society", it doesn't mean we approve of it or aren't offended by it. Many Christians live in this world that is full of sin and immorality. That doesn't mean we take part in it or are not troubled by it. A lot of us have taken up arms against it. Many of us have children who deal with temptations we weren't faced with. That does alarm us. We try to teach them to be strong and stand against the temptations just as Lot tried to teach his family to stand strong against the temptations of Sodom and Gomorrah. Yes, we are troubled and tormented as our children leave us each day to face the world. We pray that God gives them the strength to say, "NO!", to drugs, gang members or drug dealers who threaten them, the desire to take things they don't have money for and so much more. We also pray for strength ourselves to keep teaching them over and over no matter how frustrated or afraid they get to tell us what is going on in their daily lives. We can only help them if they talk to us. We pray for the strength and courage to find out what frightens our children and stand up against it whether it be the gang members, or the drug dealers with intent to harm us or our children. Believers today may not be shocked by the rampant sin in our society, but we are not accepting it without standing up for ourselves and our children. We in our small way are attempting to get rid of some of the evils around us. It doesn't seem to be doing much good. However, there is one thing we can depend on. God will surely render judgement again and those who believe in Him and live accordingly will be safe from that judgement. I have pity on those who do not believe. |

Greetings SewSusan! I agree! We are in the world, but not 'of' it! John 8:12 "Later on Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." [ISV] Blessings to you, Makarios |
