Dear cuhigher, You've been a forum member for over a year, and this is the first you've posted! I couldn't have welcomed you back in October, but I welcome you now! I think your question is a very good one! What a mess we've made by thinking that truth and love are mutually exclusive. Most of what we see exhibited by people in American popular Christendom is simply the thinly disguised values of the world. They praise amicability as the greatest of virtues. They think that to be Spirit led means being happy-go-lucky, pie-in-the-sky, sickly sweet, and eternally cheerful. They know nothing of the struggle to mortify the flesh (Romans 8:13), or to seize the kingdom of heaven by violence (Matthew 11:12). I could go on and on... One thing that helps me is to recognize that God is never honored, nor is a brother ever helped, if a sin is allowed to continue unchecked. Indeed, we show no love for the Lord or for our brethren when we close our eyes to habitual sin. Hence we have some careful instruction from Paul (e.g., Galatians 6:1-4; Romans 14; 1 Corinthians 8:7-13; etc.) On the other hand, Peter is trying to tell us to leave the past behind. Paul says something similar in Philippians 3:13-14. We don't hold a higher standard than God does! We accomplish little by reminding a person continuously of their past failings. After all, a believer's perseverance isn't proven by the good behavior of the past. Nor are the sins of the past the determining factor of a believer's ultimate destiny. What matters... what is really important... is living out our faith today. That should be the focus of our lives, and our expectation of our brethren. That is what shows God's transforming power, how we are living right now. Nevertheless, always remember that truth divides. It divides the sheep from the goats, the wheat from the tares, the elect from the reprobate. Christ made no bones about this truth (Matthew 10:34-37). But truth is always an integral part of love. Thank you for your question. I hope, rather than just ranting, I've written something helpful. In Him, Doc |

Thanks Doc... that does help. So sad about popular Christendom... For whoever wants to save his [higher, spiritual, eternal] life, will lose it [the lower, natural, temporal life which is lived only on earth]; and whoever gives up his life [which is lived only on earth] for My sake and the Gospel's will save it [his higher, spiritual life in the eternal kingdom of God]. Mark 8:35 -Keep looking up! cuhigher |
